No matter how old you are, you may find that you need to reconstruct your budget with your spouse. Priorities, needs, your income or a variety of many other factors may have changed. Here are a few steps on how to plan a new budget with your spouse.
- Devote one hour to making the budget. Do not spend longer than this on it unless it is absolutely necessary or it may become too stressful. This time should be uninterrupted.
- Both you and your spouse should write down their top three priorities. This should be done separately with no input from the other. These priorities should not be basics such as food, as those are a given priority.
- Talk about each of your priorities. Do no belittle the other person for their priorities. Try to understand your spouse and their spending habits. This will save you a lot of frustration and you will be able to come to an agreement.
- Together, combine both of the lists into one list.
- Then, design the budget to cover the basics and these priorities.
- Commit to the plan. If you or your spouse is not completely committed to the plan, there is not use budgeting. You may not be perfect at first, but as long as you strive to reach your goal you will be on the right path.
- Review and adjust the budget as needed.
