Saving the Holidays

As we enter the holiday season many people suppress a groan and dig deeper into their pocket which has a hole in it-or in other words pullĀ out the credit card. Many Americans have gotten into the habit of spending what they don’t have, they’ll willing go further into debt to buy a friend a gift that they probably do not really need. Don’t get me wrong-I love gift giving. It’s a wonderful part of the holidays. But you can’t give something, if it’s not yours to give. Another solution to this dilemma would be to create homemade gifts. There are many simple craft ideas online or in books at the local library that take basic homemade ingredients, a little time, and love for a friend. These kinds of gifts have a little you in them, and are often appreciated a little more. Or, even better you can give the gift of service. Depression is a growing theme in the US, because people are feeling a lack of love and concern. You have talents and abilities-why not share them? If you know how to work with computers, offer computer service to your friends. Or, car repairs, clothing repairs, a wonderful baked goodie when they need it, etc. Maybe they would like someone to read to them. Or they need a free babysitter every once in while (Babysitters are so expensive!) Be creative and considerate, don’t spend what you don’t have. Afterall, that is what the holidays are really about: giving what people really need. Fill someone’s cup with a little love today.
